Introducing Copilot Memory: Boost Productivity with Personalized AI

Microsoft 365 Copilot just got a major upgrade: Copilot Memory. This intelligent feature learns the details that matter—your preferred writing style, ongoing projects, even your locale—and uses them to tailor every response. No more prefacing requests with “Please keep it brief” or “Use bullet points”; Copilot adapts so you can stay focused on your work.

What Is Copilot Memory?

  • Implicit Memory Capture: Copilot listens for declarative cues in your conversations—“I prefer Python for data science,” “I’m working on Project Alpha”—and stores them automatically.
  • Custom Instructions: Tell Copilot exactly how you like your content—“Use a formal tone,” “Keep summaries under three sentences,” or “Always include a troubleshooting checklist”—and those preferences apply to every future interaction.

Why You’ll Love It

  1. Eliminate Repetition
Say goodbye to restating your style and context each session—Copilot remembers for you.
  2. Consistent Output
Whether drafting emails, reports, or presentations, maintain a unified voice without manual adjustments.
  3. Context-Rich Suggestions
Get answers and recommendations that reflect your current role, location, and projects—no generic responses.

You’re Always in Control

Transparency and privacy are built in:

  • Memory Signals: A subtle “memory updated” badge appears whenever Copilot saves a new detail.
  • Memory Management: View, edit, or delete any saved memory under Settings > Personalization.
  • Opt‑Out Anytime: Toggle Memory off completely if you’d prefer a fresh start each session.

What Won’t Be Remembered

To avoid assumptions, Copilot only saves information when there’s clear intent:

  • Remembered: “I prefer bullet points in my write‑ups.”
  • Not Remembered: “Write Python code for k‑means clustering.”

This ensures your AI assistant only retains what you explicitly deem important.

How to Get Started

  1. Open Microsoft 365 Copilot on desktop or web.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Personalization.
  3. Enable both Copilot Memory and Custom Instructions.
  4. Kick things off by asking:
    • “Ask me 5 questions to learn my writing style.”
    • “Ask me 10 questions about myself to get to know me better.”

Coming Soon: General Availability

Copilot Memory enters general availability in July 2025, on by default for all users. Tenant admins will have organization‑wide controls—enable, disable, or manage memory settings centrally via Microsoft Purview and PowerShell.
